Coming Full Circle

Cruising America’s Great Loop is one of the premier boating adventures available in North America. We spent four summers aboard our Nordhavn 35 Gulf Cart circumnavigating the eastern half of North America, logging over 7,000 miles along the way. We survived two floods, weathered a tropical storm, outran a waterspout, spent idyllic nights at anchor and met a raft of fellow boaters on our trip.

Our route took us south from our homeport of Naples around the southern tip of Florida, then up the east coast via the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to New York, north on the Hudson River and through Lake Champlain into Canada. We crossed the Great Lakes skirting the southern shores of Quebec and Ontario Provinces to Lake Michigan, came through Chicago and back to the Gulf of Mexico and Naples by way of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. We took side trips on the Erie Canal, Long Island Sound, and both the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers.

Coming Full Circle tells the story of our adventure along America’s waterways. It is a celebration of live-aboard boating and cruising, and a commentary on the places we visited. It describes the joys and challenges of the journey with a sense of humor and adventure. It tells of hauling laundry through marinas, picking wild blueberries in Canada, hiking for groceries, watching gorgeous sunsets in idyllic, isolated anchorages, arriving at a new port in time for a local festival. It tells about the community of boaters on the Great Loop, of sharing long water crossings with them and celebrating together afterwards. It is a story of discovery — new places, new friends, new foods and new ideas. After reading this book you may add boating the Great Loop to your bucket list.
